The Double-Standard the Republicans want you to foolishly swallow

The following is a comment that was left on the ABC News site. I think it sums up the warped double-standard viewpoint that some Americans are swallowing.

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.*

If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.*

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.*

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.*

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.*

If you teach teach children about sexual predators, you are irresponsible and eroding the fiber of society.* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible. *

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America ’s.* If you’re husband is nicknamed “First Dude”, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that hates America and advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

(Thanks Florence for the find.)

  • Bruce – So many Americans are hypocrites on a base level.

I did a post today basically asking Christians how they could vote for 2 liars. Mnay Christians act like they are holier than everyone else so how can they overlook this MAJOR flaw in McCain/Palin. It shows that these ‘Christians’ jsut talk crap – Christianity is a convenience not a heart felt belief.

Who is the candidate of Christian character?

McCain frequented strip clubs as a young man, slept around with all kinds of women, dumped his first wife when he returned from Vietnam because of her weight and disabilities, was an absentee father to the children of his first marriage, committed adultery in a prolonged affair with a rodeo queen before deciding to marry her, built his political career on his second wife’s alcohol money, routinely cussed out even his fellow Republican senators, called his second wife an unmentionable expletive in public, and shoots craps at casinos for fun.

Obama gave his life to Christ as a young man, married a strong woman from a lower-middle class background, has been a good father to his two girls, started his public service by working to bring churches together to help those in need, and plays poker with his political buddies with a $3 max bet.

And these ‘Christians’ believe that McCain should be their ‘leader’. Ridiculous. The Church has lost its moral compass – just like the Catholic Church has fallen so will these other Churches…

  • Amen. Democrats need to start getting nasty if they want to win (hate to say it, but look at Kerry last time – wishy washy :<), and having this on an ad or anything, would be great.

  • thank you swedenland, we Dems actually see that you europeans are smart and want to see us elect the smart man. and it may take a dual course for it to happen: a positive message and hard-hitting offense at the same time. thanks for your support!

  • This is a good post. I think many people are becoming more aware of the hypocrisy & double standard concerning this race for the White House.

Some people will believe what they see on television, after all, Tina Fey is running for VP on the Republican ticket. I really can not wait for the Presidential debates when Joseph Biden goes against Sarah Palin.
Hate to say it, but Obama may need to borrow some of Hilary Clinton’s “testicular fortitude.”

  • Ugh… Bruce don’t even get me started. I just don’t understand how the ENTIRE world can be screaming how Obama is the right candidate and yet in America, he’s just barely tied…

Our average electorate is ridiculous. I hope it all works out for the best. I can’t do another 4 years of Bush, it’ll kill me. My family has already decided we’re uprooting ourselves and moving to Canada if McCain wins.

  • I live in California and God forbid should McCain win I’m going to start a grassroots movement for California to secede from the Union.

  • Having been a stauch Republican for decades…I know how they think and process information. I also know how they twist and suppress information.

I’m very grateful for having one of those “Ah Ha!”life changing moments several years ago (accurately called ‘Transformative Learning’)

Most in the RNC are not interested in real political discourse. When questioned they take it as a personal attack…and the usual response is that you’re “picking on them”. Having been with the RNC for so long is a major regret…yet, am profoudly grateful that I’ve finally had my eyes opened. (If you take a look at my web site…you’ll see what I mean)

Thanks for creating a great site!

    Michelle

  • Bruce, at least you live in a blue state! I’ve lived in Illinois for most of my life and three years ago found myself uprooted and put in a red state (ohio). It’s SO discouraging!

  • And only now do I realize that I use the word “uproot” way too much…

  • al, I feel sorry for you indeed. I finally realized that if McCain wins I am going to start a grassroots campaign for California to secede from the Union. We will be our own nation and the Republican party will be outlawed. All Republicans will be welcome and encouraged to relocate to the U.S. AND we will hold a lottery so that people like you can then move into our new nation. And we’ll give you a good deal on a Republican home. It’ll sort of be like how the Jews finally got their nationstate of Israel. Well, we’ll have ours.

  • Hello. I love the “double-standard” post and want to forward it, but there are many grammatical errors within the message. Please let me edit it before it is sent out to numerous folks who may possibly negate its message due to its mistakes. (And if you won’t acknowledge my assistance with this, please let me have the liberty to edit the message as a forward, and please provide the original source. Thank you!)

    An independent voter for Obama!

  • Melissa, I put the post exactly as I found it as I did not want to alter what that person wrote. If you click on the the ABC News at the top of the post it will link you back to the original source. It’s not mine to make edits with, but if you wish to, go for it. And I think it’s a good thing to forward around to people. I’ve gotten a lot of hits on this post so I think it is something for people to read and contemplate. There’s a lot of prejudice we need to overcome in this election.
